The decision this creates for compliance leaders is not whether to adopt these systems. Adoption is already ahead of governance. The decision is what happens when an AI agent’s dispatch call, DER coordination signal, or forecasting error contributes to a reliability event. NERC CIP standards and FERC oversight were built around human-operated control rooms with clear chains of command. An AI agent synthesizing telemetry across a fleet and issuing recommendations, or acting autonomously on them, does not map cleanly onto that chain. The question of who signed off, on what basis, and with what audit trail becomes the thing regulators and insurers will ask first after any incident, not the savings figure in the press release.
